I really cannot be the only person who personifies inanimate objects and begins to feel empathetic for them. This may be a little odd, but I have done this since I was little. I remember when I was young and my mother took my brother and I on vacation to Florida. We had won a mini stuffed alligator. My mom named him Al and made him talk to us the entire trip. It was fun and Al became more than just a stuffed animal. He became a friend. At the end of the trip, we lost Al and I cried because I was so sad that he was gone. After my mom had personified him, she tried to tell me that it was okay he was gone because he was just a stuffed animal. That didn't work out very well.
Now, I know there are a bunch of people out there who name their things. Whether it's a car, purse, GPS, or laptop, we all do it. I think it helps us take better care of our things. For example, when I get a new pair of shoes. If they get dirty, I clean them right away because I don't want them to be sad if they're dirty. Obviously I know my shoes can't be sad, but this gives me more motive to take better care of my things.
